If you don’t know the first recipients of our freshly minted Visionary Award, Lynda Weinman & Bruce Heavin, you really should get out more. You should also make it a point to check out their magnum opus—the lovingly groomed, ground-breaking and utterly helpful website lynda.com. ( lynda.com, if you must know now, is an online learning company that helps anyone learn software, creative, and business skills to achieve personal and professional goals.)
Between the two of them they worked on the cult animated show Duckman, did special effects for a Star Wars movie (one of the good ones), owned and operated a shop on Melrose Avenue that counted Prince among its patrons, created illustrations for Adobe, MSNBC, and Dreamworks, and wrote some of the first books on web design, bestsellers all.
Join us on Thursday to find out who did which, and to salute them both for their wide-ranging contributions to the design scene in Los Angeles and beyond.

Dwell on Design: June 22-24, 2012
Dwell on Design, the West Coast’s largest Design Show, returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center June 22-24, 2012. Curated by the editors of Dwell Magazine, the three-day celebration brings together the best and brightest products, services, and thought leaders in modern design today for a series of conversations, demonstrations, tours, and much more. In addition to featuring over 350 exhibitors on the show floor, Dwell on Design encourages an ongoing design dialogue, showcasing over 70 presentations on three separate stages. This year, the show goes beyond the urban dwelling to encompass all aspects of the modern lifestyle, seeking out a new definition for modern beyond expectations. “Design is driven by exploration and touches every aspect of our lives from the technology and products we use, to the way in which we communicate, to the spaces in which we live,” said Dwell Media President Michela O’Connor Abrams. “Without exploration, there would be no innovation. This year at Dwell on Design, we’re exploring beyond the boundaries of expectation to get a first look at the people, products, and ideas that will redefine the very notion of modern.”

The process of design is embedded in the identity and commerce of greater Los Angeles and the scope and scale of creative design talent in our region is vast. Whether it is world class architecture, the design studios of major auto brands, the creative forces behind entertainment and communications or a boutique studio focused on fashion or product — the design economy in Los Angeles is significant.
We feel it is time to celebrate our status as a global design capital.

Focus finalists will be on display at the ISM: 10 year celebration at Grand Central Art Center from Saturday, July 7 until Sunday, August 12.

ANDREW BYROM: TYPOGRAPHY AND EXPERIMENTATION
Join renowned typographer and graphic designer Andrew Byrom for an exciting and interactive discussion on TYPOGRAPHY and his EXPERIMENTAL approach to graphic design the evening of Friday, June 29th from 6-8pm.
Byrom’s clients include The New York Times, Penguin Books, UCLA Extension, and Sagmeister Inc. His work has been featured in numerous design publications including Print Magazine, +81, and Creative Review, and has been honored by the AIGA and the Type Directors Club.
Andrew Byrom is a Professor at CSULB and has also taught at UCLA Extension, Northern Illinois University, plus Luton University and Central Saint Matrins in the UK. He has given presentations about his ideas throughout Europe, Asia and the US - including the AIGA Y-Conference, ATypI, TypeCon, The Type Directors Club, Kuala Lumpur Design Week, and TEDx.

Dear Los Angeles Creatives,
Next Thursday, June 21st, AIGA Los Angeles will be awarding David Mayes and Augustin Garza our Chapter’s highest honor, the Fellows Award. Each of them have been deeply involved with pushing our chapter and creative community forward for over 15 years. Through AIGA Los Angeles, I’ve been lucky enough to get to know them well and have been inspired by their incredible energy, generosity, and ability to make meaningful change.
David Mayes has worked tirelessly on several AIGA LA committees – Programming, Education, Development and Finance – devoting countless hours to help provide a vehicle for the Chapter’s communications and financial health. He is the reason that Typecraft Wood & Jones became one of the Chapter’s longest running sponsors. Instead of focusing on their own sponsorship benefits, Typecraft concerned itself with ways it could help out, convincing all of us that making an investment in the creative community matters far more than just the bottom line. David’s true love for our Chapter has driven him to lend a reliable helping hand as one of our Chapter’s key leaders for over 10 years.
Agustin Garza was one of our Chapter’s most dynamic Presidents from 2006-2008. If I could be half the President that he was, then I can say I have accomplished something. Agustin realized that our Chapter had become complacent, and sought to realize its bigger international and business potential. He immediately got local networks and magazines involved, and went directly to the Mayor Villaraigosa to have our organization recognized as an influential community in Los Angeles. Now he serves on the Mexico Design Council, the Mayor’s Design Advisory Panel, and the NEA Design Panel. You can also catch him explaining the value of design and branding on Telemundo’s News Network. His vision and outreach has inspired us all.
Our event next Thursday evening at 7:30 pm at Royal/T will be a great celebration for these two outstanding Fellows.
Please join me, and many other members of the Los Angles design community, in raising a glass to their incredible accomplishments. I look forward to seeing you!

A Letter from the President
Dear Members,
I am thrilled and grateful to become the next President of AIGA Los Angeles.
Thank you for the trust you have bestowed me to lead our chapter for the next two years. The board is filled with enthusiastic and passionate people, and they have been working incredibly hard to make the upcoming Fellows Awards Night the start of a new chapter in AIGA Los Angeles.
Change doesn’t miraculously happen, but it’s through blood, sweat and tears of individuals that move the bar forward. David Mayes and Agustín Garza are two of those people who are so well deserving of this award, and Lynda Weinman and Bruce Heavin will be receiving our first AIGA Los Angeles Visionary Award. On June 21st, we will honor and thank these four individuals for making our chapter and our profession more valued and understood.
I invite you to be an active part of AIGA Los Angeles history by attending this wonderful occasion, and raising a glass to our honorees. I invite you to take part in meeting generations of creatives and being part of our community. I invite you to stop waiting for things to change, but move the bar forward. I invite you to represent.
I want a Los Angeles Chapter that has the power to fill 500 seats, and I know we can do this for this 2012 Fellows Award Night. We’re close, but it’s not going to happen if I merely “hope” you’ll be there. Instead I’m inviting you directly.

The Royal Location For Fellow Awards - June 21st!
The institutional dimensions of Royal/T lay within its art space. This past weekend, May 31-June 2 in Salt Lake City, AIGA held its annual Leadership Retreat. More than 200 AIGA chapter and national board members came together in Salt Lake City for “Go! AIGA Leadership Retreat,”. Featuring chapter inspiration stories, breakout sessions, networking lunches, evening events around the city and much more, this invitation-only event provided chapter board members with the information and tools to address pressing challenges and plan for the future in their communities.
Check out our own AIGA LA Board member, Jose Caballer, as he moderated a discussion with 3 chapter presidents. Jose Caballer is the Chief Education Officer at The Skool, an online education movement that aims to teach the standard process for successful web projects.
Panel speakers included:

Mike Gorman - President AIGA West Michigan
Together, they answered “What are three takeaways that you got from the 2012 Leadership Retreat?” and ”What are three actions that you can take right away with your chapter?”
A Typographical Tribute To The Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch
IN COMMEMORATION OF ADAM “MCA” YAUCH’S PASSING, DESIGN STUDIOS HAVE ASSEMBLED TO PAY TYPOGRAPHICAL TRIBUTE.
When many of us heard about Adam “MCA” Yauch’s passing, we hopped on Twitter to express shock and our condolences. Maybe we pasted an epitaph like “you have to fight, for your right, to party,” so long as it fit within 140 characters.
