Distinc believes in working with causes because Distinc wants to provide better understanding, better positioning, and better communication. Janette Jackson studied at The Art Institute of Portland and was President of her AIGA School Chapter for two years. She helped build Factory from scratch, which was a publication at The Art Institute Portland and served as a Project Manager for one year. Her volunteering endeavors for AIGA started with AIGA Portland and continued her dedication to AIGA Los Angeles. She currently works part-time at Closet as a Social Media Coordinator. She spends her free time blogging about AIGA events and design as well as inspiration. Her true passion is Design for Good and Sustainability.

President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer and Member-at-large positions on the board are critical to ensure the continued growth and function and stability of the chapter.
The board of directors is a body elected of and by the members, that holds the association in trust for AIGA members past, present and future. Its guiding principle is one of leaving the institution stronger at the end of each director’s term than it was at the beginning.
Design professionals with previous non-profit board experience, fundraising, financial management, and senior executive experience are especially encouraged to secure nomination.
Go to AIGA LA to learn more about nomination and board member responsibilities.

Greetings and Happy New Year! We are thrilled to have exciting new events lineup for this year. We have listed and describe the top 7 AIGA LA events for 2012.

For the first time in two years, AIGA LA held a Town Hall Meeting. I am not talking about anything government related, but a gathering of AIGA Members who are a part of the Los Angeles Chapter. It is a time where voices are heard and one can make a difference. The Town Hall Meeting was at Continuum in Venice, which was a fantastic place since I believe it let our creative juices flow since so many ideas were brought to the table. The membership committee and programming committee worked together to get everything done. The membership committee worked registration and the programming committee gathered all the ideas being brought to the table and mingled amongst all the guests.
I was at a table with Allison Bloss and Stan Evenson (both Board Members of AIGA LA). The event was filmed so there is documentation of what happened at the event. Every person there was on camera stating their name and what they want to see be changed with AIGA. We got to hear from various board members about all the committees. Tamera from the membership committee asked that we all help to get our professional memberships up to 500 and I do believe that is possible if every member tried to get at least one member we exceed the goal given by the membership chair. Just in the month of November, we have 77 new members part of the Los Angeles Chapter, which I find to be amazing.

On Thursday night, the winners of the AIGA (Re)Design Awards, a competition celebrating the best in sustainable design, were presented at the (Re)Design Extravaganza at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. Underneath a handsome Stegosaurus specimen in the museum’s new Dinosaur Hall, guests could admire the winning work up close.
The (Re)Design Awards were started by the Colorado chapter of the AIGA in 2009, and was from the beginning, designed to be a traveling competition. This year, the L.A. chapter got their chance to represent. Stan Evenson, who co-chaired the competition with his wife Tricia, told me how far he thinks we have come: “As long as 15 years ago or so I remember speaking to our clients about sustainability practices and feeling I was considered slightly left of Communism when I would bring the subject up. Today, it’s very different since designers are more conscious than ever, understanding that our planet is headed on a collision course with nature if we continue wearing ‘design blinders.’ There is no room in our landfills to handle this oversight. It’s a great opportunity to encourage sustainability and social responsibility in our design solutions.”

On August 3rd, 2011, AIGA LA and Adobe presented the third part of the this insightful series. This one in particular was subtitled Digital Publishing for Tablets and Touch Devices. Kellis Landrum (Meat and Potatoes) was on hand to present guest speaker Michael Newman and Brian Wood as they helped demystify the wed for designers.
Magazine and newspaper publishers have been facing great challenges in the past few years as advertising dollars for their print publications become harder to come by and news has become a commodity that is free and immediately available. The introduction of tablet devices last year has created a surge of new energy in the publishing arena as publishers have seen a way to combine the visually intricate designs of paper, with the compelling interactivity of devices. It’s easy to get publications of all types (magazines, newspapers, annual reports, catalogs and other corporate documents) through an application that can be distributed not only on the iPad, but also on a growing range of Android tablet devices.

A Behance / AIGA LA and the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture & Urban Design for PechaKucha #27: BLINK. Featuring the diversity of graphic design in Los Angeles.
What is it?
PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. Each presentation only lasts 6 minutes. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.
